Loop Marketing playbook

My highlights from Loop by Kipp Bodnar and Kieran Flanagan, stage by stage.

Kipp Bodnar and Kieran Flanagan are the legends who guided a whole generation of marketers through inbound and now they’re guiding us on the AI-native journey. Their new book, Loop: Outlearn. Outmarket. Outgrow., is the playbook they rebuilt from scratch when AI broke the old one. They tested it first on HubSpot’s own marketing team.

I was impressed by the book. It’s honest about what stopped working and practical about what to do instead. These are my highlights: how to take the ideas from the book and use them to build your AI-native team.

“When the cost of production is free, judgement is the only thing that has a price.”
Kieran Flanagan

The Loop in 4 stages

The Loop replaces the funnel with a cycle. A funnel ends. A loop learns. Every time you run it your marketing gets a little smarter and the learning compounds.

  1. Express your story. Define what makes you worth choosing and put your taste into a form AI can read.

  2. Tailor your messaging. Turn that story into content, tools and messages that feel made for each person.

  3. Amplify your reach. Show up where buyers now discover and decide: AI answers, paid feeds and creators.

  4. Evolve in real time. Feed what you learn back in, so the next loop starts smarter than the last.

You run 1 loop per objective. A product launch is a loop. Getting into AI answers in your category is a loop. You don’t loop “marketing”.

Every stage comes with its own tools. Here’s what each one is and where to go deeper if you want to build it.

The Loop playbook for AI-native marketing teams: a wheel of the 4 stages (Express, Tailor, Amplify, Evolve) with their 10 tools and the Loop book at the centre

Stage 1: Express your story as only you can

Express is all about taste. AI gives you the median of everything it was trained on, which is exactly where your competitors already are. So the job in Express is to put your taste into the system before AI creates anything.

“You never outsource your taste to AI.”
Kieran Flanagan

Taste Profile

Brand guidelines were written for people. They aren’t really useful for AI. They sit in folders nobody opens. AI can’t turn a mood board or a list of brand values into output that sounds like you. The Taste Profile is a new way of expressing yourself for AI: a living document that every AI tool and every agent on your team reads before it creates anything. It has 2 parts.

  • Customer Taste. How your buyer thinks, feels and talks: their emotional register, their exact language, what makes them stop and engage, what makes them distrust you, the moments in their week you can hook into and the voices they trust.

  • Brand Taste. Your 4 stories: the brand story, the product story, the thought leadership story and the customer story.

Unlike a brand guideline, it gets sharper every time you market.

Prompt: Build the Customer Taste Profile. Example: HubSpot’s sample Taste Profile.

Buyer Sim

The Buyer Sim is built on top of the Taste Profile. It’s an AI version of your ideal customer that you show anything to before you spend: a headline, an email, a landing page, an ad. It tells you what lands, what doesn’t and how likely it is to take the next step.

It’s exactly the synthetic persona we built in Week 4 of the Agentic CMO Accelerator. It takes the insights and verbatims from talking to real customers and amplifies them with AI. It makes your everyday work better: from new campaigns to new messaging.

Prompt: Activate Your Buyer Sim

Stage 2: Tailor messaging for every channel and customer

Tailor turns your story into something that feels made for each person. Not “Hi {First Name}”. A message that reads as if someone researched your business before writing it.

Content

Content is now infinite and attention isn’t. The goal is to be remarkable and relentless at the same time: original enough that nobody could get it by asking ChatGPT and consistent enough that you show up everywhere your buyer looks. 1 strong anchor piece becomes many native versions, each rewritten for its channel and each traced back to a story in your Taste Profile. The test for every idea: if a competitor could publish it unchanged, cut it.

“It’s not enough to just create great content. It has to be great content at scale.”
Kipp Bodnar

Prompt: Atomize Anchor Content Across Formats

Build

Build means building small tools your buyers actually want to use and using them as marketing. Not another ebook. A useful thing. The example in the book is a home page messaging grader: paste in your home page and it scores clarity, positioning and the call to action, then gives you 3 recommendations. HubSpot built its brand on free tools like its Website Grader. With AI, any marketing team can now build one without waiting for engineering.

Prompt: Build the Home Page Messaging Grader

Direct messaging

Direct messaging is one-to-one email and chat at scale. AI researches each contact (their business, their role, their likely problem and where they are in the buying journey) and writes a message for that 1 person. It was 1 of the first things HubSpot tested when it moved to the Loop. Kipp says conversion rates went up 80 to 100%.

Stage 3: Amplify across channels

Amplify puts your work where buyers now make decisions. Ranking in the top links is no longer the goal. Being part of the answer is.

AEO

Answer engine optimisation means being mentioned and cited when buyers ask ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini about your category. That takes hyper-specific content tied to your product, pages written plainly and answer first, published pricing and genuine mentions on the sites AI trusts most: YouTube, LinkedIn and Reddit.

Ads

Ad platforms now find your audience better than hand-built targeting. Your job moves from building audiences to producing enough varied creative for the algorithm to learn from and to optimising for closed revenue rather than form fills.

“Creative is the new targeting.”
Kieran Flanagan

Creators

Your buyers already trust certain voices. Creators let you show up inside those conversations, in the creator’s own words. The book’s filters for choosing them: audience, size, fit and growth. Relevance beats reach.

Prompt: Find and Evaluate Creator Partners

Stage 4: Evolve your strategy

Evolve is what makes the Loop a loop. Every campaign teaches you something. That learning goes straight back into your Taste Profile, your prompts, your skills and your agents instead of a slide deck nobody opens again.

“Loop is all about learning.”
Kipp Bodnar

Marketing’s New Operating Model

The operating model is how your team runs loops week to week.

  • Sprints, not quarterly campaigns. 2-week or 6-week sprints, each with 1 outcome. 2-week sprints give you 26 chances to learn in a year. Quarterly campaigns give you 4.

  • A weekly learning routine. A short review every week: what moved, what it means, what you’ll change.

  • The team that runs it. Zero-to-one marketers who take an idea from start to finish with their own AI system, masters of craft who turn good into great and small pods of people and agents that share 1 context and own 1 outcome.

“Either you achieved your outcome or you learned a lot.”
Kipp Bodnar

Measure What Matters

The Loop replaces activity metrics with the 4 Rs, 1 per stage, with the promise of “one number per quarter”.

  • Remarkability (Express): is your differentiation holding as more people and agents create?

  • Resonance (Tailor): does the work land with your buyer?

  • Reach (Amplify): are you showing up in AI answers and across channels?

  • Regeneration (Evolve): how fast is your loop learning?

“AI makes the loop faster. Only the right measurement makes it smarter.”
Kipp Bodnar

Use case first. Tool second. Measurement always.

Go deeper: HubSpot’s 4 Rs scorecard.

My pick: start with the Taste Profile

If you take 1 thing from the book, make it the Taste Profile. Everything else in the Loop runs on it. Content without it sounds like everyone else’s. Direct messages without it sound like a template. AEO without it gets you mentioned for the wrong things. Build yours this week, put it inside the tools your team already uses and run your first loop on 1 objective.

AI doesn’t make you unique. What you bring to it does. The Loop is a system for bringing it every single time.

I highly recommend the book. Read Loop: Outlearn. Outmarket. Outgrow. by Kipp Bodnar and Kieran Flanagan for the full playbook. And if you want to build your AI-native team with other senior marketing leaders, that’s the work we do inside the Agentic CMO Accelerator.
