Most AI output is mediocre because the inputs are lazy. Here’s the five-tool fix.

Most AI output is mediocre.
Not because the technology is bad. Because the inputs are lazy.
Marketing teams build content agents. They’re surprised the output sounds like everyone else. Then they blame AI.
But the AI didn’t fail. The human did: they gave AI nothing to work with.
I hear these challenges from CMOs constantly:
“Content produced is at best bog standard slop, at worst full of inaccuracies”
“Not being able to customise with our unique brand identity tone and voice”
“AI scales noise, not relevance”
Same pattern. Different words. The output is mediocre because the system around it is incomplete.
Here is the Anti-Slop Playbook: five tools I use (and train marketing leaders on) to build Agentic Content Systems that deliver on-brand high-quality content that drives traffic and revenue. An actual system that compounds.
1. Context engineering
AI produces average content when you feed it average inputs. Do you want unique on-brand output? Share what makes you unique. Share your Brand Soul. Everything that makes your voice distinctive. Not a two-page style guide written in 2021. Not a philosophy document. A living, specific collection of what makes you, you.
That means:
Your brand positioning, unique messaging and point of view
Your content strategy and pillars
Examples of content for every channel that tell AI what good looks like
Thought leadership content pieces: webinars, podcasts, decks, research
Transcribed leadership interviews, customer conversations and even sales calls
Then let AI extract the gold: your tone of voice, core narratives, proof points, quotable lines, FAQs.
From there, it can produce landing pages, emails, social posts, GEO content. But only if the raw material is rich enough.
Here’s the thing most teams get wrong: for AI, it’s easier to understand and write in your tone of voice using 10 examples as an input, rather than a style guide. The AI needs to see patterns. It learns from specificity. So pull together your best work. 5 articles your audience loved. 10 emails that got high open rates. 20 blog posts that drove conversions. Show the AI what good looks like. Let it learn the pattern.
The quality of your input will define the quality of your output.
2. Brand guardrails
Tell AI exactly what good looks like. Then tell it what bad looks like. Then enforce it ruthlessly.
Your Brand Soul: positioning, messaging and style guide
Words you use and words you never use
Compliance and regulatory requirements baked in
Formatting standards, structure, length
The more boundaries you set, the better the output. A creative brief with tight constraints produces better work than a blank page. Same principle applies to AI.
What good looks like for one brand is not what good looks like for another. Your guardrails need to be yours. Specific to your world, your audience, your standards.
Brand guardrails aren’t restrictions. They’re the guardians of your Brand Soul.
3. Quality Assurance agents
In an agentic world, one agent creates and another agent checks.
You don’t just use agents to write. You use agents to review and fix other agents’ work.
One reviews for style and brand consistency
One checks for compliance
One optimises for conversion, SEO or GEO
Your QA agents don’t just evaluate the output. They fix and rewrite it.
For a regulated healthcare client we build and share a 9-step Content Agent for GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) content production. Research, brief, write, writing QA, factual check, compliance, internal links, external links, citation check. The agent had more sub-agents to QA than to actually write. The output? Same quality. Same compliance standards. Saving time and cost on content production.
By the time content reaches a human, most research, structural and quality issues are already resolved by AI. The human is there only to judge the quality and to maintain brand and content integrity.
Let agents quality-check agents before a human sees the work.
4. Human-in-the-loop
The higher the quality bar, the tighter the review.
Not everything needs deep editing. A quick internal update? Light touch. But the work that represents your brand at its best? That does.
Your sharpest creative mind should be editing the final output. Not writing from scratch. Editing, refining, elevating. The skills that matter are judgement, discernment, creativity and humour. The things AI still can’t replicate.
This is a shift in role, not a reduction. Human owns unique messaging. AI writes all the assets.
Your best copywriter should be editing AI output. Not writing from scratch.
5. The learning loop
And here’s the unlock most teams miss.
Create a learning loop. Have a Feedback Agent capture your human edits and feed them back into the system. Every correction, every rewrite, every “that’s not quite right” becomes training data for next time.
The human doesn’t just give feedback. The agentic system learns. Next batch is better. The batch after that is better again. It’s compounding, not repeating.
Without this loop, you’re doing the same edits every week. With it, the AI gets closer to greatness on its own.
Semrush does this at scale. Their automation produces a first draft in minutes. Then qualified editors with high standards give feedback. The AI learns from those edits. Next draft is better.
The AI produces. The human judges. The agentic system learns. That’s the loop.
Build Content Agents producing quality content
You don’t need all five tools to start. Pick two: context engineering and human review. Build a simple pipeline: Brief → Write → Review. Run it 10+ times. Look at what the human keeps fixing. Those patterns become your guardrails.
Once those are smooth, add a QA agent. Then the learning loop. Tool by tool. Quality increases. Speed increases. Your content stays yours.
The first AI output is often 6 out of 10. Most people accept it. That’s the gap. Your standards make outcomes valuable. That’s the work.
In the Agentic CMO Accelerator, you don’t just learn this framework (and many more). You build it. In 6 weeks, you’ll have working Strategic Marketing, Content Engine, Campaign Launch and Market & Customer Intelligence Agents with guardrails, QA and a learning loop producing quality content for your brand.
